Breaking the Streak: Don Mattingly's Impressive Series Winning Record Comes to an End Against Cincinnati
The Philadelphia Phillies' six-series winning streak under interim manager Don Mattingly came to an end as they dropped the series finale against the Cincinnati Reds, 9-4. This loss also brought the Phillies back to an even 25-25 record through 50 games.
Despite the two consecutive losses, Mattingly remains confident in his team, stating, "There is nothing in here that scares me that we’re not going to be the team that we need to be."
The Phillies struggled to get hits against Reds' lefty Andrew Abbott, going nine straight innings without a hit until Brandon Marsh's infield single in the fourth. Their only other hit came from Trea Turner's solo home run in Tuesday's loss. However, in the sixth inning, Alec Bohm and Edmundo Sosa each hit home runs to put the Phillies on the board.
Unfortunately, the Reds responded with more runs in every inning except one throughout the series. Mattingly acknowledged this, saying, "We really just weren’t able to get our momentum going. We kind of have it, but we were never able to sustain it."
The Reds were able to score on every Phillies pitcher they faced, except for Brad Keller who threw a scoreless eighth inning. Tim Mayza, Orion Kerkering, and José Alvarado all gave up at least two hits and one earned run.
Designated hitter Kyle Schwarber was also unavailable for his third consecutive game due to a stomach issue. Mattingly mentioned after the game that Schwarber was feeling better and could have pinch hit, but the opportunity did not present itself.
Starting pitcher Aaron Nola showed improvement from his previous outing in Pittsburgh, where he allowed six runs. However, he still gave up three runs in the third inning and a season-high eight hits throughout his five innings on the mound. Nola's ERA currently stands at a disappointing 6.04 through 10 starts this season.
After a quick six-pitch fifth inning, Nola was pulled from the game. This marks only the second time in his last seven starts that he has completed six innings. Unfortunately, the loss also broke the Phillies' three-game winning streak in Nola's starts.
The Phillies will have a much-needed off day on Thursday before returning to Citizens Bank Park for a weekend series against the Cleveland Guardians. Friday's game will also feature a giveaway of pitcher Cristopher Sánchez's bobble figurine.
